Moulded Mâché

24 09 2016

On a lazy Friday morning, with sleepy eyes and droopy legs barely touching the ground, I trudged towards spotting my app cab. Holding my multifold umbrella and raindrops spluttering on my moulded baggage, here I was geared up to leave for the airport.

Taking the earliest flight meant waking up the lights before they retired for the day. Little did I realise, the smell of fresh made coffee was spreading like blanket mist on the silent roads. Not so far away, in a nook, I could smell activity brewing. A little further, I realised it was my newspaper vendor, Shyam and his little nimble team.

Shyam has been dropping us our daily dosage of news past a decade now. Everyday, rain or heat, the news never betrayed us. Inquisitive as always, not so long ago, I had spoken at length with him. Trying hard to know the dynamics of paper vending business.

Waking up at 03:45 hrs to wait for the news agency drop the daily packet is a task in itself. Sorting and marking them individually and eventually distributing is a routine that isnt anything like a cake walk. However this isn’t what facinated me, something else did.

Shyam, a 4th std school dropout, had to shoulder his family responsibilities. Protecting a group of 3 besides himself isn’t an easy task these days. What moved me, although he couldn’t read and write himself, his kids would come to collect monthly subscriptions. A little nudge and I realised these kids could also speak and write in English. Well at least for the communication and calculation bits, they were leagues ahead than their dad.

Having lost out to learn, Shyam had been religiously sparing droplets of money out of routines. Today, both his children attend English medium schools and would probably join college too. His secret hid in the determination to invest on ones future. The willingness and courage to come out of one’s comfort zone and #THiiNK big. Shyam had been saving every bit into smaller denominations of sip and their sponsor every bit of children education via Government schemes. Dropping those heavy pamphlet loaded papers, washing cars and subsequently protecting us to have us get a dreamy sleep, every single Rupee added to his kitty. Bit by bit, sip by sip.

Here I was, completely hypnotised into a story of a person who although couldn’t read or write, was spreading awareness to people. As if saying, “newspaper only tell you events, one needs to discover self to create news”! Hats off Shyam, for motivating people like me to shun those news crap and get on with life.

Ones approach to life moulds its family. Financial willingness, big or small makes one stronger than paper mâché. Who cares what news the newspaper carries tomorrow. Events unfolded like reality TV before me, and suddenly the bright halogen light suddenly shook me off my imaginative daze.

Time was ripe to scoot to the airport. Thanks Shyam, for providing me that zest in life to succeed in all adversities. You are the perfect role model to prove everyone wrong who feel, “one needs to have lots of money to be successful”.

Who wants to read repitative news, atleast I don’t!
